In 2006 an estimated 500 visitors to Stanmer Park near Brighton took part in a community arts research project. The first stage of the project ran from the 11th February until the 11th of July.

Artist Will Nash designed and distributed a map of Stanmer Park which encouraged people to explore the Park and draw their route around it on the map. The map was available, free of charge, in the park and at various sites around the Brighton area.

The Footprint project was designed to record and reveal the many activities taking place in the park – from biking to bird-watching, picnicking to flying kites. It also asked for the community’s views on Stanmer Park. The maps were collected in Footprint post-boxes located at the entrances to the park.

The marks made on the maps by the participants informed the creation of new sculptures and prints. The returned maps were exhibited alongside the route mark sculptures at the Gardner Arts Centre in Spring 2007.
