Ragley Sphere - Jerwood Sculpture Prize Shortlisted 2009
The proposed work is a large sphere fashioned from 28 spun, 3mm thick, stainless steel parabolic reflector dishes. The radii of each dish will be the same as the radius of the sphere (250cm). The parabolic dishes will reflect and focus light, heat and sound towards the centre of the sphere. Small gaps between the dishes allow patterns of light and air to enter the internal space. Large gaps will create a south facing opening in the upper part of the sphere to maximize the light entering the space, and a northeast opening at ground level to allow people to enter. The form and function of this geometric expression will engage the visitor with the elements of sound and light.
