Particle Series

The Particle sculptures were inspired by a chance discovery on the isle of Elounda on the coast of Crete. As I explored the rocks at the end of Kolokitha beach, I noticed an unusual accumulation of red brown matter had encrusted the ancient rock formation. Looking closely I realized what had occurred, the matter was made up of hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of paperclips. They must have fallen off a ship and somehow remained together in the sea as a kind of flowing interconnected mass until they ended up spread all over the rocks. This accidental addition to the local geology seemed to me to represent so many different things about us and our world. All at once, it was both ugly and beautiful, the structure and the story, the Anthropocene, the incongruity of this mass of paperclips alchemically forming a new geological layer in this remote location.

The Particle sculptures are objects built up accumulations of small steel components, the arrangement can be regular or chaotic, or the elements can be in transition. The making process is a balance of control and intuition, as the component parts are arranged spontaneously, flowing from one state to another.
