Client: Dandara

Location: Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells

  • A 5 meter high sculpture constructed from 6 sheets of stainless steel. The sheets were folded to create 3 rhomboid tubes arranged to form a hexagonal column. The flowing perforated pattern alludes to the water in the spring from which Tunbridge Wells takes its name, it twists and turns flowing across the panels in an unbroken loop. The angular structure of the sculpture and the arrangement of the surrounding granite paving is derived from the ‘Tumbling Blocks’ pattern common in Tunbridge Ware, a form of decoratively inlaid woodwork that was characteristic of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent in the 18th and 19th centuries.

At night the sculpture is internally lit emphasising the overlapping perforations which can create swirling optical interference patterns as the viewer moves around the space.
